Independent and branded paint tester apps

Choosing your new paint color can be tough… so many beautiful options to choose from! Plus, it’s difficult to imagine how it will look considering your light and the size of your room. Luckily, technology is one step ahead here. Nowadays, there are plenty of apps that help you visualize and test colors for exterior and interior painting… without spending a dime on samples.

When looking for apps to test paint colors, you can either go with a manufacturer’s brand or choose an independent one. Although both are good options, we’d advise going with an app made by paint manufacturers. By going with a brand’s paint visualizer, you’ll end up with the specific name or code of the color(s) you want on your project. That way, you’ll know exactly what samples to ask for and it’ll make buying paint easier.

In contrast, independent paint visualizer apps don’t suggest specific paint names or codes. This means you’ll have to go to the store and try to match colors with your palette. In our experience, this is a very slow process. It will take almost as much time as not using an app in the first place.

There’s plenty of apps to choose from, but here are the ones we’ve used (and loved) in the past:

ColorSnap

by Sherwin Williams

Why we like it: One of the largest color selections available. It’s also easy to use.

Our personal favorite for residential painting thanks to the large catalog. The app works by using stock photos or uploading your own. Then, you can search for a specific Sherwin Williams color or match the color from another photo. It’s perfect if you’re trying to replicate an idea from Pinterest or a magazine.

We really enjoyed the suggested coordinating colors to create custom palettes, and the augmented reality part of the app worked pretty well to quickly change colors. There’s also an option to see the paint both in daylight and at “nighttime”, to really get a feel for the tone.

Best for: Full makeovers and getting inspired with the suggested palettes.

Color Capture

by Benjamin Moore

Why we like it: Marking favorite colors makes buying way easier.

This app has everything you need to experiment with different paint colors. From uploading your own pictures to using stock photos, trying out a video visualizer, and matching colors to a pic on your gallery. The ability to save specific hues and then see them together is a nice touch.

This app can connect with a specific device by Benjamin Moore, the Color Reader. It’s a device that allows you to get an almost exact match of any color already on your wall. It’s an extra expense ($99 at the time of writing) but it might be worth it if you want to match a very specific color in your home.

Best for: Finding the right paint to match your existing hues.

ColorSmart by Behr

Why we like it: It’s a desktop app. The palette suggestions are really useful as well.

This paint tester app works in any browser. To test colors, either match from a pic on your gallery or choose directly from Behr’s catalog (around 2500 shades). Since Behr is Home Depot’s home brand, it’s a seamless process from testing to ordering samples.

Although we liked Color Smart, we don’t love that there’s no option to upload your own pictures. Using stock photos is fine to start with, but it’s also useful to see your own room before committing.

Best for: Those who are color challenged and would like suggestions for color palettes in their space.

Glidden’s Paint Color Visualizer

Why we like it: It’s a website so you can do it from your computer. You can also test exterior paint colors.

Glidden offers an app that’s easy to use and has all the basics. For example, to save a project, the only requirements are a name and an email address. Your project is accessible without needing to create an account. Plus, after the color is selected, the app offers the option to either buy online or find a store.

The best feature, in our opinion, is the option to test exterior painting to really have a feel of how your home would look.

We would have liked to have the option of matching the color to another picture, or having palette suggestions. Other than that, it’s a simple app that works if you’ll be getting Glidden paint.

Best for: Those with a color already in mind.

We love anything that will make a home renovation or exterior painting project less stressful. Having a sample of how your room might look like in a digital app is a great way to start the color selection process.

Of course, we don't recommend blindly trusting any of these apps. Once they have suggested a specific color, get a sample and try it out in the room. It’s always better to look at a color in person, and see how it changes depending on the time of day or the lights.

Our best advice is trying out one of the apps, then getting the hue and maybe the second runner-up as samples. Use them at home and live with it for a bit. It’s the best option to be 100% sure of your final choice.

And if you’re unsure about your painting abilities, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Especially when it comes to large surfaces, a professional painting contractor is your best option to ensure top-notch results. Our team would be thrilled to give you a hand on your next painting project, the experts are here to help.
